Position Summary:

 

Assistant Operation Manager

 

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Operations Manager with strong production / fabrication experience, and a strong background in steel fabrication, ISO, and production scheduling. The ideal candidate will oversee day-to-day shop floor operations, ensure the efficient flow of work orders through the fabrication process, and maintain high standards of quality, safety, and productivity.

 

This is a key leadership role requiring hands-on industry knowledge, proven team management, and the ability to optimize manufacturing processes in a fast-paced steel fabrication environment.

Responsibilities

 

  • Lead and manage all production and fabrication activities across the facility.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain detailed production schedules to meet project deadlines and customer requirements.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineering, and procurement to align material availability and labor resources with production needs.
  • Monitor and adjust workloads to ensure maximum efficiency and on-time delivery.
  • Manage a team of welders, fitters, machine operators, and shop personnel—providing leadership, training, and performance feedback.
  • Oversee QA/QC standards throughout the fabrication process; ensure compliance with customer specs and industry codes (e.g., AWS, AISC).
  • Monitor key production metrics (efficiency, downtime, throughput, labor hours) and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant work environment; enforce safety standards, procedures, and housekeeping practices.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication issues and collaborate with engineering on drawing discrepancies or design clarifications.
  • Participate in capacity planning and long-term production strategy.

Safety & Other Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The successful incumbent will play a key leadership role in reducing risk of incident and injury and will drive implementation of many Safety initiatives
  • Lead the warehouse New Hire Safety Training as part of the New Hire Experience to ensure new hires are prepared to perform their new responsibilities safely.
  • Lead Safety training for hourly employees, monitors, tracks, and reports key Safety metrics, and ensures compliance with federal, state, local and corporate regulatory programs.
  • Conduct incident investigations to ensure completeness and accuracy, develop and track corrective actions, act as a change agent for the area, and lead multi-disciplinary teams to make process improvements and reduce risk of injury.
  • Conduct monthly safety inspections and employee safety awareness meetings.
  • Site leadership, interviewing, hiring, onboarding and training employees; employee development; planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; rewarding and correcting employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • BS or BA degree in business, industrial engineering, distribution or related field is preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in a fabrication management or production scheduling role within the steel industry.
  • Strong knowledge of steel fabrication processes (cutting, welding, forming, assembling).
  • Proven ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, shop blueprints, and welding symbols.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems for scheduling and job tracking (e.g., FabTrol, STRUMIS, or similar).
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and certifications (e.g., AWS D1.1, AISC, ISO 9001).
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
  • Experience in structural steel, industrial fabrication, or custom metalwork projects.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Welding or fabrication trade background is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and production planning tools.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily shop/plant environment with regular exposure to fabrication equipment and materials.
  • Requires the use of PPE and adherence to safety standards.
  • Occasional extended hours or weekend work based on project timelines.
