Overview

The General Manager is responsible for ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and development of our colleagues while driving operational excellence and maximizing business performance across multiple branch locations. This role demands a high level of integrity, promoting the Triple-S culture, and ensuring alignment with company policies and values. The General Manager will also oversee full P&L responsibility, lead teams across diverse sites (Baltimore, MD; Manassas, VA; and two locations in Richmond, VA), and ensure consistency, efficiency, and alignment with company goals. The General Manager is expected to foster an inclusive, accountable, and performance-driven work environment, focusing on continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Business Development: Collaborates regularly with the Regional VP to identify and capture new business opportunities within the branch’s geographic area and specialized sectors. Develop strategic go-to-market plans and supports the sales team in driving growth, market penetration, and customer acquisition.
  • Multi-Branch Oversight: Leads the successful day-to-day operations of Baltimore, MD; Manassas, VA; and two Richmond, VA locations, ensuring all sites are aligned with company goals. Implement site-specific performance goals to maintain operational consistency, high-quality service delivery, and optimal resource allocation.
  • Customer Engagement: Maintains strong relationships with key customers, addressing concerns, fostering customer loyalty, and identifying opportunities to improve service and satisfaction. Acts as a key point of contact for top-tier clients and manages any escalated issues.
  • Quality Assurance: Partners with the Operations team to ensure facilities are well-maintained, organized, and safe. Conducts regular walkthroughs and engages with employees to ensure adherence to quality standards. Works proactively to identify areas for improvement and enhance operational quality.
  • Operational Productivity: team performance through key metrics (financial results, pick counts, overtime reports, and production output). Uses data and analysis to track productivity, identify bottlenecks, and implement corrective action plans where necessary to meet targets.
  • Financial Performance (P&L): Takes full ownership of the P&L for the assigned branches, ensuring profitability through effective cost management, resource optimization, and performance monitoring. Regularly reports financial results and uses data to make strategic business decisions.
  • Credit Management: Operates within the Account Authorization Matrix (AAM) to approve credit transactions. Documents rationale for credit decisions and partners with the Credit Manager to ensure sound credit practices that mitigate risk.
  • Best Practices Implementation: Adopts and promotes best operational practices across branches to ensure consistency, standardization, and continuous improvement throughout the organization. Share learnings and operational insights to elevate performance at all locations.
  • Safety Leadership: Champions safety and actively participates in monthly Corporate Safety Committee meetings. Works closely with the Operations and Safety teams to track safety metrics, identify hazards, and implement corrective actions to ensure a safe work environment.
  • HR & People Strategy: Partners with local managers to ensure all employees receive clear, actionable performance feedback and development plans. Reviews and signs off on all performance evaluations to ensure fairness and consistency. Works collaboratively with HR to implement people strategies that support employee engagement, retention, and development. Supports workforce planning, succession planning, and initiatives that promote a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
  • Inventory Management: Ensures proper inventory management and stock levels according to customer demand and lead times. Uses forecasting tools to proactively address inventory challenges. Coordinates purchasing between branches and regional buyers to minimize supply chain disruptions.
  • Expense Control: Approves branch-level expenses, ensuring they align with the annual financial plan. Uses sound judgment in approving large expenditures and works with corporate buying programs to maximize cost savings.
  • Capital Expenditures (CapEx): Operates within approved CapEx budgets, ensuring purchases are made strategically and in alignment with company goals. Engages with HQ for high-value purchases or delegates as appropriate (e.g., large equipment handled by VP of Operations).
  • Hiring & Termination: Responsible for hiring within the branch’s budget, ensuring compliance with corporate hiring procedures, including background checks and reference verification. Works with HR before initiating any terminations, except in cases of egregious policy violations. Fosters an inclusive, high-performance team culture through strong leadership.
  • Company-First Decision Making: Makes decisions that prioritize the best interests of the company over individual branch interests, ensuring long-term organizational growth and success.
  • Team Collaboration: Actively collaborates with other branch managers and corporate teams to share insights, best practices, and strategies. Assists with special assignments that benefit broader regional or company-wide success.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field (or 7-10 years of progressive management experience in a leadership role within the Metals Distribution Industry).
  • MBA or advanced degree is a plus.
  • General Management Experience (preferably 5+ years), including Sales Management experience (5+ years), with a strong background in Metals Distribution or related industries.
  • Operations/Operations Management Experience (3+ years) with experience in managing supply chain operations is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies:

  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
  • Proven ability to make data-driven business decisions and drive performance through key metrics and KPIs.
  • Industry knowledge (Non-ferrous metals, including Aluminum, Stainless Steel, etc.) is a plus.
  • Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence at all organizational levels.
