As the California General Manager, you will direct, manage, and optimize the overall operations and financial performance (P&L) of multiple plants. Set policies and procedures that guide plant operations' productivity, quality, and cost efficiency. You will systematically collect operational metrics to analyze productivity and set performance targets to meet revenue and cost goals. Support the development and deployment of manufacturing practices focused on quality and continuous improvement. Ensure robust plant safety and security inspections, auditing, and training procedures are implemented to meet OSHA and other required regulations. Oversee multi-functional plant teams. The General Manager is expected to lead with the highest level of integrity while driving growth, profitability, and operational excellence, and ensuring the company operates efficiently and delivers exceptional products and services.  

 

Salary: $230,000 - $250,000 Anually

Responsibilities

The General Manager will oversee all aspects of our California sites. In conjunction with Sales, Purchasing, Operations, Safety and Finance, you will establish targets in Sales, Gross Profit, Inventory levels, and inventory accuracy.

 

  • Safety of all employees - Includes active participation in the Corporate Safety committee monthly meetings. Coordinates with Operation Managers and Regional Safety Managers to implement safety protocols and measures to ensure a safe working environment for employees. 
  • Business Development – Regularly communicates and works with sales teams to identify and capture new accounts in both the geographic area and the area of the branch's expertise. Collaborate with the sales team to set sales targets, monitor performance, and develop strategies to achieve or exceed sales goals. The Outside Sales Representative(s) assigned to the business unit will report directly to the Sales Manager but will develop planning and strategy in conjunction with the General Manager.  
  • Sales – Visit top customers for branches periodically to address issues appropriate to his/her responsibilities as General Manager. 
  • Quality – Ensures all plants and their equipment are clean, maintained, and organized. Does so by regularly visiting the plants and communicating with employees and management. Coordinates with the VP on metrics to improve quality. 
  • Productivity – Ensures a productive workforce among all facilities in the region. Uses relevant and consistent metrics to measure (i.e., financials, pick count, OT reports, production reports, etc.) as designed and directed by the Regional VP. 
  • P&L – is responsible for the profitability of the branches assigned to the region and the productive and safe use of assets. 
  • Credit – Must operate within the matrix for credit approval, including documenting rationale when exercising authority. Coordinates with Credit Managers to nurture team credit decisions. 
  • Inventory – Must manage total inventory under management within the limits established by the VP consistent with industry lead times and anticipated customer demand. Uses appropriate tools to forecast inventory levels to avoid surprises and/or warns management in advance of problems. The manager will be responsible for coordinating purchasing between each branch and regional buyers. 
  • Expense management – In accordance with the annual financial plan, it approves all expenses of the branches and uses prudence and good judgment. Control costs and manage financial resources effectively. Draws upon corporate buying programs and ensures good communication before approving large expenses. 
  • Capex – Operates within annual or special budget allocations. Relies on HQ for help in negotiations or delegates to HQ for purchase. (i.e., VP Operations in HOU purchases all burning machines) 
  • Profit Sharing Meetings – Conducts quarterly town hall meetings and communicates performance and market conditions with all employees. 
  • HR and Performance evaluations – Coordinates with local managers to ensure performance objectives are set and regular performance evaluations are conducted. Coordinates with HR managers to ensure compliance with company policies and relevant HR laws. All compensation changes for employees must be within corporate guideline budgets. 
  • Leadership – Has authority to hire personnel within the budgets adopted and approved by management. Ensures that company hiring policy (reference and background checks) are adhered to. Has authority to terminate within the guidelines of corporate HR department. Should seek guidance from the HR Department in performance related issues prior to termination versus egregious violations of company policies. 
  • May have other assignments which overlap with other branches. 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, Marketing, Industrial Distribution, or Operations Management, or ten years of progressive management experience in the Metals Distribution Industry. 
  • Strong understanding of metal products, market dynamics, and industry trends in the structural and carbon flat rolled industry. 
  • Proficiency in financial analysis and budget management. 
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully managing sales teams and achieving revenue targets. 
  • Possess a customer-centric approach and a commitment to delivering high-quality service. 
  • An ability to make sound business decisions based on data and statistics. 
  • Experience working in a ‘Supply Chain’ capacity is a plus. 
  • MBA preferred.
